Material damage was huge. Prior to devastating earthquake a weaker one struck the city which helped in avoiding higher death toll.
A total of 112 businesses, 36267 apartments, 131 school buildings and most of cultural, social and public buildings and institutions were damaged. 86000 apartments were completely devastated. Major damage was dealt to school (266), cultural (146), health care (133), social and administrative buildings. City's economy also suffered significant losses. All companies worked with significantly reduced capacities, and some have even completely shut down. Primary and high school students travelled by bus to other parts of Yugoslavia to continue the ongoing school year that had just started. Renovation and recontruction of the city started right after the earthquake. City infrastructure was restored and rapid urbanisation had started. Thanks to the support and solidarity of people from all over the Yugoslavia, but also to aid from Europe and the rest of the world, Banjaluka stood up on her feet.
